Vernal Pools

An all media visual exploration inspired by the ecology of vernal pools. The exhibition includes paintings, prints, drawings, and work in stone, ceramic, mixed media, audio, and poetry by 16 artists from around New England.

June 11 - September 25

Joseph Nicoletti: A Retrospective

Joseph Nicoletti, an important realist painter, is a senior faculty member of the art and visual culture department at Bates College, and has served as director of summer sessions at the International School for Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Umbria, Italy. Although he has taught at Bates since 1981 and his works have been featured in Bates exhibitions numerous times, this is the museum’s first exhibition to show a broad range of his work. The exhibition features paintings and drawings from the museum’s collection, from other museums and private collections, and from the artist himself.

Artist’s Talk / Opening Reception: Saturday, June 12, beginning at 2:30 PM

Joseph Nicoletti presents a slide lecture focused on the evolution of his imagery, in connection with this opening of a major retrospective of his work. Olin Arts Center, Bates College. An opening reception in the museum follows immediately. Artist’s talk, 2:30–3:30. Exhibition opening and reception, 3:30-5:30.

In Contrast: More than black and white

Many things may be stark opposites, with the contrast being apparent at first glance, while other differences may be subtle, and require a second look. In Contrast will explore these differences either visually or within a deeper meaning.

MPBN 9th Annual Juried Art Auction

Help MPBN celebrate the arts and support MPBN. View the art and take a bus tour of the farms from 2-4:30. Refreshments and a cash bar provided. Images from the Festival: Dance Photo Exhibit

Peaks Island photographer, Arthur Fink, has a passion for dance. For the last four summers he has spent several weeks photographing dancers at the Festival. These stunning and provocative images capture the dancers at work -- warming up, taking class and rehearsing. Included are images of the acclaimed artists-in-residence.

Colors of Hope: An inspirational exhibit mounted in conjunctions with The Dempsey Challenge.

Art plays countless roles in people’s lives. For an artist, it may help to express the emotions connected with life’s many experiences. This exhibit complements the efforts of The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing, encouraging artists to reflect upon their art as an expression of hope.

National Trails Day Celebration / Community Trail Clean-up Day

LA Trails, a program of the Androscoggin Land Trust, will host a National Trails Day Clean up of the Riverwalk in downtown Lewiston and Auburn starting at Festival Plaza. Come experience this great trail and help us to keep it and the rivershore clean. Festival Plaza, Auburn - 9 AM

Bates Dance Festival

The Bates Dance Festival brings together an international community of choreographers, performers, educators and students in a cooperative community to study, perform and create new work. The Festival offers a supportive atmosphere aimed at fostering a creative exchange of ideas, encouraging exploration of new ground and providing opportunities to experience a wide spectrum of dance/movement disciplines. Artists, students and audiences share their knowledge and inspiration through workshops, jams, discussions, informal showings and performances. Source to the Sea Trek

The 2010 Trek will highlight sections of the 174-mile length of the Androscoggin. The Trek is an event that serves our regional communities and New England well by demonstrating that our waterways are economic, recreational and natural resources that must be appreciated in order to be preserved for future generations. 12th Annual Chief Worumbo Androscoggin River Race

This canoe and kayak race begins at the Durham Boat Launch (Route 136) and ends at the Lisbon Boat Launch (Route 196). An amateur, family-friendly race/competition of 6 miles, with possible class 1 rips and easy class II rapids, allows people to experience the undeveloped shoreline of the Androscoggin River from Durham into Lisbon Falls. Pre-Registration by July 2nd (includes race t-shirt and lunch). Registration is 9 AM, race begins at 11 AM.

Gulf Island Pond Paddle and Bar-be-que

Join the Androscoggin Land Trust and the Androscoggin River Watershed Council as we explore Gulf Island Pond on the Androscoggin River via canoe and kayak. The trip will include a visit to the shores of the new Androscoggin Riverlands State Park and a BBQ. Turner - 10 AM

Pal Hop

Six incredible bands, one nostalgic night as the “Pal Hop” rocks again. This concert event will benefit The Great Falls Balloon Festival and The Lewiston Police Athletic League and will include: The Royal Knights, The Innkeepers, The Travelers, Terry and the Telstars, The Rockin’ Recons and The Moondawgs. Tickets: stadium seating $25, tables (seat 10) $300; available at The Colisee (207) 783-2009. The Androscoggin Bank Colisee - 8 PM

August 20 - August 22

Great Falls Balloon Festival

In addition to the balloons, the Festival features 30 different food booths serving everything from soup to nuts, including breakfast for those early morning launches. Craft and trade booths invite browsing, and a children’s area entertains toddlers to teens. Music is provided by many different entertainers, from children’s shows to blues singers, to jazz, pop, and oldies. A carnival, parade, and various demonstrations and contests round out the weekend events. Balloons take-off at roughly 6 AM & 6 PM each day, weather permitting. Lewiston Auburn - throughout the day

APL Film Series: Classic Movie Musicals!
Tuesdays throughout the summer (not held July 13): June 15 - July 27

Beat the heat this summer and join Auburn Public Library for some breezy fun as they screen outstanding examples from the golden age of American movie musicals. The scheduled films feature Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, and Howard Keel. (For specific titles, see the events calendar on the APL website.) Admission is only 50 cents and includes popcorn and punch. This PrimeTime Program is especially for seniors, but all are invited to come! Auburn Community Band Wednesday Night Concert Series
Wednesdays throughout the summer: June 16 - August 25

These evening summer concerts feature the 47-member Auburn Community Band performing show tunes, marches, and/or well-known songs popular with both young and old. Bring your own chair. If inclement weather is forecasted, the performance may take place indoors at the Hilton Garden Inn Auburn Riverwatch. (June 16 and June 23 performances may be cancelled if inclement weather). Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul Noontime Organ Concert Series
Wednesdays throughout the summer: July 7 - August 18

In additon to its magnificent structure and interior, as well as its spiritual connotations in the community, The Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, on Ash Street in downtown Lewiston, boasts a monumental Casavant organ with opus 1587 and 1588 instruments that, combined through a single console, comprise the largest church organ in the state.
