Portland String Quartet
The Portland String Quartet (PSQ) has been performing, teaching and
recording with its founding members since l969. In 1986 they were
proclaimed "Maine treasures" and awarded Honorary Doctor of Music degrees
at Colby College where they served as Artists in Residence for 20 years.
The quartet also has served as Artists in Residence at LaSalle University
in Philadelphia, PA. Coming together from musical training at Curtis,
Eastman, Indiana, Juilliard, Oberlin, and San Francisco State College, the
quartet members have played an important role in the artistic renaissance
of the State of Maine, championing Maine and American composers both
nationally and internationally.
At Lewiston Middle School, the PSQ will perform for the entire student
body
in the form of a lecture/ demonstration, with relatively short selections
introduced so the students know what to listen for. The concert will
include selections from a wide variety of styles that show how music has
changed through the years. Immediately following the performance, the
Quartet members will work with LMS’s students who are currently studying
string instruments in an interactive master class.
