L/A
Arts newest visual arts space, the Community Gallery, at 221 Lisbon
Street, Lewiston will host its first exhibit, The Capital Area Camera
Club’s Annual Invitational Photography Exhibit from May 14 – June 13,
2008. Titled “Mystical Maine Waters,” the exhibit revolves around Maine’s
abundant water sources: streams, ponds, bogs, lakes, rivers, tidal pools,
beaches, and the Gulf of Maine. Photographs featured in the exhibit
include fine art black and white traditional prints, digital images, and
color film prints. There will be an Artists’ Reception on Friday, May 16th
from 4 to 7 pm; the public is invited.
The
Capital Area Club was established in 1990 as a forum to share the love of
photography, the creative photographic process, establish friendship, and
give local talented photographers in the Central Maine/Capital region
opportunities to exhibit their work. Membership includes amateurs,
serious hobbyists and professional photographers.

Initially slated for the Turner Center for the Arts, the “Mystical Maine
Waters” exhibit was put on hold when the center’s closing was imminent.
It was providence that led the Club to L/A Arts. “While we were
devastated to hear about the Turner Center’s closing, we were thrilled
that the Camera Club called us when they did. We were in the middle of
renovating the front office space into the new Community Gallery,”
explains Cheri Donahue, L/A Arts marketing director. “When the exhibit was
described to us, it seemed a perfect fit. It’s a win-win situation and
we’re thrilled to be able to help.” To make the offer even more appealing
to the fledgling arts space, the Camera Club’s Exhibit received support
from Livermore Falls/Jay area businesses, who were happy to have the
exhibit open at the new Lewiston gallery. Sponsoring businesses of
“Mystical Maine Waters” include: Fitness Stylz , Kay Advanced
Dental Concepts, and Psylegis, Inc. of Livermore Falls; La Fleur’s
Restaurant and Parker Builders Inc. of Jay and Copies Etc. of Livermore
Falls and Manchester.
The new
visual arts space was created to offer local artists and craftspeople
another outlet for their art work. L/A Arts also runs Gallery 5 at 49
Lisbon Street, displays artwork in Gritty’s Art & Ale Window at the corner
of Court and Main Street, Auburn, rotates artwork on the Art & Java Wall
and brick work of the new Willy Beans Bistro and Café, Mill #6 on Lincoln
Street, Lewiston, and most recently began working with Auburn’s Community
Relations & Business Specialist, Tracy Steuber, to maintain artwork in the
foyer of Auburn City Hall. “People have known L/A Arts as a presenter of
performing arts and arts in education work for 35 years,” comments
Donahue. “Over the past year or so, we have been expanding our visual arts
support, too. We can literally say there’s a whole new arts scene in LA
(Maine).”
In
addition to full exhibits, the Community Gallery will offer a changing
selection of locally crafted jewelry and assorted creative offerings. The
space will also prominently display and make available literature for the
various arts and cultural events happening in the community, in many ways
filling the pressing need for a cultural / tourism outlet. Additionally,
L/A Arts box office is physically located at 221 Lisbon Street, making
walk-in ticket purchasing a very enjoyable experience.
L/A
Arts Community Gallery is open Monday – Friday, 10am – 3 pm, with the
exception of closing at 12 noon on Wednesdays and closed holidays. More
about the gallery and other L/A Arts programs and events can be learned on
line at
www.laarts.org or by calling the local arts agency at 782-7228.
