LEWISTON,
MAINE – “Picture yourself in a boat on a river, With tangerine trees and
marmalade skies.” Although the Beatles wrote these lyrics decades ago, these
lines could also describe images created by students in the Design
Technology Class at Lewiston Regional Technical Center this semester.
Digital scenes created by students out of fruits and vegetables are the
focus of an exhibit scheduled to open on April 1 at L/A Arts Community
Gallery, 221 Lisbon Street, Lewiston. An opening reception will be held from
5 -7 pm that evening; the public is invited to attend.
Sylvie
St. Amand teaches Design Technology, along with several other courses, at
LRTC. Each semester her assignments encourage students to be creative and
take chances in the computer arts fields.
The
“Fruit and Veggie Landscapes” assignment is a creative progression from the
structured Adobe lesson “fruit and vegetable face,” which teaches beginner
Photoshop users how to manipulate image elements with various Photoshop
tools. “Adobe provides a great beginner exercise but I want my students to
not only learn how to use the program but also to push their creative
abilities. About ten years ago, I was working with Jim Garner, a former art
teacher at Lewiston High School. We transformed the ‘fruit and vegetable
face’ lesson into ‘Fruit and Veggie Landscapes’ with a directive to create
Surrealistic images,” explains St. Amand. “I started taking pictures of
fresh fruit and vegetables myself, to build up a portfolio to use as a
resource. Everything in the images must be either fruit or vegetable, or a
texture from a fruit or vegetable. Students all have the same set of images
to work with, but the variety of landscapes they create are amazing.”

St. Amand
isn’t the only one impressed with the work. One of her students, Anthony
Vangeli, won a Gold Key in the Scholastic Art Awards Competition this year,
under the Computer Art category, for his landscape.
“Fruit
and Veggie Landscapes” are only one of several assignments Design Technology
students are challenged with each semester. Another is to create an image in
the style of Andy Warhol, leader of the Pop Art movement. Several pieces in
the exhibit will represent this theme.
In
addition, teachers from the Lewiston High School Art Department have
selected several 2D works by their students that will be displayed in the
upcoming L/A Arts Community Gallery Exhibit.
Fruit
and Veggie Landscapes and Other Works of Art
will remain up through May 15. L/A Arts Community Gallery is located at 221
Lisbon Street, Lewiston, Maine. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 10am – 3
pm. For more information contact L/A Arts at 782-7228 or online at
